What “family” means to Gen Hoshino: “It felt like fate” to be chosen as the ending theme song for “SPY x FAMILY” <“Kigeki” Interview>.

The trailer for the film, which uses Hoshino’s “Kigeki” (comedy), has already been released and has been attracting a lot of attention for its spy action elements and heartwarming elements of Lloyd and his friends.
We asked them about their thoughts behind the music, behind-the-scenes production, and episodes related to their “family.

What “family” means to Gen Hoshino The ending video is moving.

SPY x FAMILY” is a very popular and remarkable work. How did you feel when it was chosen as the ending theme song?

Hoshino: I have always loved reading the original story, and I received the offer just as I finished reading the latest book, so I was very happy and felt like it was fate. I really like the balance between the serious setting and the light-hearted, fun comedy, and the occasional glimpse of what the characters are going through.

I have an image that your music is always played at the end of the anime, but this time, were you conscious of the aftermath after watching the anime?

Hoshino: This time, I was asked to create a song with “FAMILY” of “SPY x FAMILY” as the main theme. I thought that the tone of the song would be fast for the opening of an anime, so I felt that this request was the exact opposite of that, and that the song I actually wanted to create would fit well with what I had in mind. Rather than being conscious of the viewer’s lingering impression, it was more about the fact that the image of the work and the request matched my current mode.

What does “family” mean to you?

Hoshino: The way I see family, which I find comforting, is similar to what is depicted in “SPY x FAMILY”. I think things are changing little by little, but it is a little different from the socially accepted image of family in Japan today. I felt comfortable with the idea of a family that is connected from the heart, and I thought that if I could portray that as my daily feelings and the feelings of the work at the same time, it would become a song for “SPY x FAMILY” as well as a song for everyone.

You have sung theme songs for anime before, but are you aware of any differences between anime and drama/movie theme songs?

Hoshino: I don’t feel there is much difference. For example, in the case of “Doraemon,” the worldview is of course different, but at the same time, the idea of “what is Doraemon for me? For example, in the case of “Doraemon,” I wrote a song based on the worldview of the character, but also on the idea of “what Doraemon means to me,” so I think there is that kind of approach.

Currently, only the main trailer has been released, but there are high expectations for the ending video. Have you seen the ending yet, Mr. Hoshino? (*The interview was conducted before the first broadcast of the anime)

Hoshino: The ending song that is played as the end roll will be broadcast from the third episode; my ending theme song will be played as the background music for the first episode, and the opening theme song will be played for the second episode. I really want everyone to watch it as soon as possible. I really want everyone to watch it as soon as possible. I’m sure you will love it!

As it happens, one of my favorite directors is in charge of directing the video, and when I met him a long time ago, I told him that I hoped we could work together someday. I was very happy that we were able to make it happen this time. I don’t think I can skip this ending because it is really wonderful.

I’m looking forward to it! Listening to “Kigeki” I was struck by the slight vocal change in the chorus. Is there anything you were particular about in the way you sang?

Hoshino: In the chorus, I sang in a falsetto and a lower octave natural voice at the same time, and there is a chorus as well, and I really like the way you layered the voices. In the past, I did not have a very wide range, so I just sang in falsetto and my natural voice, but I felt that this created a unique sound image. Now this has become my color as well, so when I was composing this song, I set the key and composed the music accordingly.

I was impressed, as always, by Mr. Hoshino’s choice of words, such as “mischievous star” and “kitchen that connects our lives.” When do those phrases come to mind?

Hoshino: “Let’s write lyrics!” And. (laugh). They don’t come out naturally. If I write down what I want to say in detail, the lyrics don’t have enough words at all. So I cut them down or use shorter words. I use metaphors, rework words, and change words depending on how high or low the melody is, such as “it feels better to make consonants stand out here,” “the c line feels better,” “the la line is easier,” or “the ka line is too assertive here, so let’s not use it. …… After much trial and error, I arrived at this word choice.

It is a very steady process. As I read through the lyrics, I was deeply impressed by the idea that although the song is a “Kigeki“, it also depicts a “tragedy” at the same time.

Hoshino: I think the word “Kigeki” also includes the meaning of “tragedy. I think everyone has hardships and sorrows behind the fun, so I try to depict those hidden aspects while having fun with my music. Otherwise, I feel that the fun would become lighter. In particular, the characters in “SPY x FAMILY” are trying to protect a warm place where they can feel safe, even though they have been scarred in the past, so those lyrics came naturally.

Finally, please give a message again to those who listen to “Comedy”.

Hoshino: I hope that you will listen to the song many times and unravel the details of the sound and lyrics of the song. Also, the ending video that will be shown in the third episode is so wonderful that I can feel the love that the producers must have put into the music. I am really looking forward to the airing of the video, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it. Until then, I hope you will listen to “Kigeki” a lot and stand by.

Thank you very much.
