Lupin III VS Cat’s Eye, a collaborative animated film between the anime Lupin III written by Monkey Punch and the anime Cat’s Eye written by Tsukasa Hojo, will be distributed exclusively worldwide on Prime Video in 2023. A teaser visual and the first PV have been released.
The film is being developed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Lupin the Third animation series and the 40th anniversary of the original Cat’s Eye series. Set in the 1980s, when Cat’s Eye was serialised, the retro and stylish crime action of thieves and phantom thieves unfolds. Lupin III VS Cat’s Eye will be the first Amazon Original Japanese animated film.
Directed by Shizuno Kobun and Seshita Hiroyuki. Animation production will be handled by TMS Entertainment. Comments have also been received from Hojo, Shuhei Kato, the second son of Monkey Punch and representative of MP Works, Kanichi Kurita as Lupin III, Keiko Toda as Hitomi Raiu and producer Keiichi Ishiyama.

Lupin the Third is the work of a great senior who has been reading it since he was in junior high school. I wonder what Mr Monkey Punch’s reaction would have been if he had been asked about this collaboration…? I can’t help but think. Before his death, we had several opportunities to meet in a bar, but we never talked about comics with each other. One time, I was told indirectly by an acquaintance that Mr Monkey Punch had something to ask of you, only he passed away before I could hear the story. I don’t think that was indeed the story of this collaboration, but I am happy to be able to work with him this time through a strange connection. I sincerely hope that Dr Monkey Punch was also pleased.

Monkey Punch loved the world view of Cat’s Eye. There was a thing that he happily talked about, saying that it would surely be an interesting work if Cat’s Eye and Lupin the Third” were to go head-to-head. A collaboration between Cat’s Eye and Lupin III by Hojo Sensei, with whom I had a close exchange before his death. For Monkey Punch, who had been eagerly awaiting this project. I think it is a dream-like project. Even the original author enjoyed the anime Lupin the Third as a fan. I’m sure, this project too, as one of the fans, he thinks is waiting for the completion of the work.

Lupin the Third celebrates the 50th anniversary of its animation adaptation, while Cat’s Eye marks the 40th anniversary of the original story. I didn’t think I would be able to have a showdown in such a memorable year. Lupin, jigen, goemon and Zenigata’s totsan. And Fujiko and the three sisters! I’m really looking forward to it now!

When I heard about it, I was like, What? Really? I fell over like that! (Laughter) I don’t want to think about how many decades it’s been since I’ve worked on this anime! (Laughs) I’m going to enjoy it in a festive mood.

Lupin III vs. Cat’s Eye is a dream collaboration following Lupin III vs. Detective Conan”. The result is a fast-paced work that is full of brilliant and stylish action elements, as it is a ‘thief’ vs. a thief. As Hojo-sensei has respect for Monkey-sensei, he asked us to “make it look like the Cats exist in the world of Lupin and to make them more like Lupin’s characters”, so we asked manga artist Haruya Nakata to draw illustrations and redesign both characters. The reason why Lupin’s jacket is pink is because the period setting of Cat’s Eye is the 80s and this film also features that period setting, so we decided to use pink when we think of 80s Lupin.
