Miorine Rembrandt, played by Lynn in the currently airing Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, is one of the main characters who attends the same school as Suletta Mercury, a transfer student from Mercury.
In the second part of the interview, we will talk about how Lynn has changed over the course of her career, her keen insight into her roles and works, and the importance she places on approaching her roles in a natural way, giving us a sense of her now.
My favorite character is Char
-You mentioned that the Gundam series was a work that you admired. Have you seen the previous works named Gundam as well?
Yes, I have. Of course Mobile Suit Gundam, but also Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and SEED DESTINY.As for Mobile Suit Gundam 00 I watched it every week in real time when I was a student. I was quite a fan, buying goods and going to events.
All the characters in the series are attractive, and the storyline is serious, with many sad twists and turns, so it really sticks in your mind. The other thing is the coolness of the mobile suits themselves. I wanted to ride one myself someday (laugh).
–(laugh).
But I saw Mobile Suit Gundam, the origin of the series, after I was chosen for this role. I thought that in order to understand what Gundam is, I had to watch Mobile Suit Gundam, which is the beginning of Gundam. Of course, I had already had the opportunity to see some of the famous lines and scenes, but after watching the movie, I realized that it was really interesting.
-What did you find particularly attractive about First Gundam?
What I thought was the most amazing part was that even though important people died in the battles, there was rather comical music playing. It was so original!
Gundam Death Scenes
-It is also typical of Gundam to use music that is the opposite of the tension of the situations in the play, isn’t it?
The music is comical, so there is a scene where I thought no way he could have died… and that was a shock to me. Conversely, I thought that the use of comical music to create sacrifices in the battle showed the horrific state of being accustomed to everyday life. It is an amazing work that was done more than 40 years ago.
It is unrealistic to see people fighting each other in outer space, but I also thought it was a work that could be easily captured in a very realistic way.
Of all of them, what is your favorite Gundam character?
After all, I would have to say Char Aznable. He is cool even though he is an enemy.
–Char is like a half hero, isn’t he?
I was surprised when I saw that too. From the beginning, Char is suddenly fighting, and it’s already the climax all the way through. But when Char doesn’t appear for a long time in the middle of the anime, I feel really sad. I thought,「 Hurry up and come back!」 (laugh). I fell right into Shia’s tricks.
-(laugh). How did you perceive the performances of the voice actors who appeared in Mobile Suit Gundam, the origin of Gundam, and who are now called legends?
All of the legends really show their one-of-a-kind voices and presence all over the place. There is a realism and a proper sense of character.
In addition, the touch of the old pictures has a certain flavor, a unique power. Combined with that, each of the characters is very lively. Even if I tried to imitate that kind of acting, it would be impossible….
-Even among the friends of White Base, everyone speaks as if they are fighting, or everyone seems to be acting as if they are always on the verge of battle. On the other hand, what do you think is the appeal of Gundam 00, which you enjoyed in real time?
The characters in Gundam 00 are quite unique, and I think it is a heavy story. So I remember watching it all the time with a single thought in my mind, I hope the characters will be saved. The performances of the cast were that great.
-Did their plays at that time influence your own expression today?
.Of course. I wish I could do plays that would leave a lasting impression on people and make their hearts ache, and I have the desire to make Miorine that kind of character. I have no other choice but to do the best I can.
This is no longer the time to be shy.
-You are currently active as a voice actor. Have you seen any changes or growth in yourself as a result of being involved in this work?
I used to be a very shy person, I couldn’t talk to people at all, and I was the type of perso” that took a very long time to get along with. But in this job, I meet all kinds of people every day, so I think that may have improved. I don’t have time to be shy (laugh).
When I was a newcomer, I was grateful that the senior workers took care of me, talked to me, and took care of me. At first, I was spoiled by their kindness, and I tried to somehow respond to their kindness. Recently, the number of junior employees has been increasing, and now I am in the position of being called a senior.
-So it’s not the time to be shy, is it? (Laugh).
I was supposed to be a pleasant person to begin with, but I wasn’t very good at expressing it in front of others. But recently, I have been able to break out of that shy shell. I think I have grown by absorbing the good things from my experience of working in various jobs and being involved with various people.
-That’s wonderful. Please tell us about the moment when you feel your work is interesting.
I love my job, so everything is fun. There are not so many times when I feel that I don’t like it or that it is hard. Even if I find it a little difficult at the time, when I think back on it later, I can say that I enjoyed it all, and I feel a sense of satisfaction every day as I face my work.
-So all the stress of your job is converted into enjoyment?
After all, it is a job that I wanted and became. Every time I get a job, I am grateful for it and try my best to make it the next step. I am surrounded by many people who do wonderful work, so the moment I get to experience their work firsthand and work with them on a play, I feel a tremor in my heart.
-By the way, Gundam is set in space. Is there anything you would like to do in space, Ms Lynn?
Postrecording! I think no one has done postrecording in space yet. (Laugh). I wonder what it would be like to do a postrecording from space. …But I wonder if it will be much the same as on the ground? Remote technology is so advanced now, isn’t it? It might be surprisingly normal and possible to do postrecording in space (laugh).
-I was not expecting to get an answer that I would be postrecording in space (laugh). What do you think THE WITCH FROM MERCURY will be like for you?
For me, of course, it is a very gratifying job, and Miorine Rembrandt has a very challenging role, so I am confident that it will be an important work for me. I am thinking about how I will deliver this anime to you all. I hope that everyone will be happy that Lynn is a voice actress, and that the work will remain in everyone’s hearts.
–Even if the role of Miorine was only decided on her birthday, it’s already fate, isn’t it?
It will definitely be a turning point for me and an important work.
-Lastly, could you tell us again about the appeal of the animation THE WITCH FROM MERCURY?
I think that this work will be interesting as a new work called THE WITCH FROM MERCURY without being restricted by the title Gundam. It is also a very challenging work in that it is the first work with a female protagonist and that it is a school story. Of course, I want to meet the expectations of the fans and betray them in a good way, while respecting the history and foundation of the Gundam series that has been spun up until now. I want to create a work that will leave a lasting impression on everyone, including the characters, the story, and the mobile suit battle scenes. I want to create a place where I can put everything I have done so far, and a place where the next world will unfold That is this Gundam.
Thank you for watching. See you soon.
