The anime adaptation of the 「Weekly Shonen Jump」 series has been a mega-hit in recent years, and one that looks set to continue this trend is the TV anime 「Chainsaw Man,」 currently airing on TV. In a world where demons infest everyday life, Denji makes a living as a devil hunter who exterminates demons. He is tricked and killed by a yakuza, but is revived by the power of a chainsaw demon 「Pochita」. We interviewed「 Fairouz Ai, 」the voice of 「Power, 」a blood demon who is buddies with 「Denji 」(Kikunosuke Toya), the Main Character in Chainsaw Man.
Interview with Fairouz Ai as Chainsaw Man Power
The character I thought I liked best was Power -chan
First of all, how did you feel when you heard that 「Chainsaw Man」 was going to be made into an anime?
I was originally crazy about the original manga. The anime adaptation of 「Chainsaw Man」 was announced at the same time I finished reading the last volume. It felt like fate had already had its way with me, and the character I liked the most after reading the manga was Power -chan. I was shocked because I had never met a character before who said and did such disgusting things, but was still cute and can’t help it. I knew then and there that if there was an audition for the voice of 「Chainsaw Man,」 I wanted to be a part of it.
My desire to play the role of Power -chan went stronger.
You have won the role that you have always wanted to play!
At first, I was happy just to be able to participate in the audition, but as I moved on to the next stage, my desire to play the role of Power-chan became stronger and stronger. I am very happy to have been blessed with this kind of connection.
The characters in 「Chainsaw Man」 are alive.
The original story has a strong pull that draws you in, doesn’t it?
The 「Chainsaw Man」 had a newness to it, and I was completely absorbed in it. While there is a retro feel to the illustrations, the character designs and the story itself are new. It is a new-age manga that mixes retro and avant-garde. What I especially like about 「Chainsaw Man」is that the back alleys and bare plumbing are depicted in the background in the door drawing (comics) and so on. Including that atmosphere, I felt it was a story about a new world.
I feel that MAPPA, the production company, has carefully recreated that atmosphere in the animation.
The fact that「 MAPPA」 is producing the animation alone is a big expectation, but when I actually saw the teaser PV, I saw that even each strand of hair was carefully and precisely depicted. Even the tips of their fingers were moving in a way that was typical of each character, and the characters of 「Chainsaw Man」 were alive there. I saw the teaser PV before the audition, and I thought I would be happy to be involved in this work, and even if I had not had the chance to be involved, I would have definitely watched it every week in front of the TV.
Power -chan looks like a beautiful girl, but her first name is 「washi」 and she is a demon. Wasn’t it difficult to create a role for her?
The basic premise of this animation work was that the director, Ryu Nakayama, told me that he wanted to strip away the anime theatrics and give the character a realistic feel, as if she were speaking in an everyday conversation. However, in the case of Power -chan, it is not often that a girl refers to herself as 「washi」 in everyday conversation, and I do not know how Majin speaks in everyday life (laugh). So I tried to keep her character’s characteristics intact and make her fit in naturally with her surroundings, but in a good way, so that she floats a little.
I value acting like a younger sister at work.
What do you value in expressing (voice acting) the charm of Power-chan, who is 「unmannered」 but 「lovable」?
On set, I try to emphasize the little sister feeling. For example, you can love a younger sister even if she says stupid things, can’t you? I want to give them a cute little sister feeling, but I don’t want to flirt with everyone, so it is difficult to find the right balance. If the fans like Power-chan in the anime, I want to say to them, 「It was a good balance, wasn’t it」? (laugh).
I hear that the recording sessions are very friendly.
Denji, Makima, Power, and Akiwere all together in the second episode of the anime, and since the voice actors are all close in age, they immediately started talking to each other as if they were friends. 「Toya-kun」 has little experience in dubbing, so he learns by watching how other people behave, and he sometimes says crazy things to make everyone laugh (laugh). If he doesn’t understand something, he actively asks questions and turns them into his own power, which is just like Denji.
Chainsaw Man Interview Power Last Message
The original manga is of course a fascinating and wonderful work, but the anime version adds movement and voices to the characters, and even the environmental sounds have been created with great care. I hope all the fans will be able to feel Denji and the other characters come to life. I will do my best to give my best performance!
Thank you for watching. See you soon!
