Tatsuya Endo, author of “Spy Family,” talked about what he wanted to be as a child and how Anya Forger’s abilities in the film came about.
Atsumi Tanazaki, a voice actress, appeared as a guest on the radio program “Atsumi Tanazaki’s Sushi Eat! (Bunka Hoso), in which Atsumi Tanesaki, a voice actress, appears as a personality. Tatsuya Endo, the author of the TV anime “SPY x FAMILY,” and Shihei Hayashi, the editor in charge of the anime, appeared as guests on the June 2 episode.
Ms. Tanesaki, who plays the role of Anya Forger in the film, interviewed Ms. Endo about what she wanted to be when she was a child and the story behind the creation of the spy family, and the interview has been getting a lot of feedback.
◆What did you want to be when you were a child?
When Mr. Tanazaki asked, “When and why did you decide to become a manga artist?” Mr. Endo replied, “I was too young to remember, but a friend of my brother’s was drawing manga, and I think my brother started drawing too, and I started copying him. My brother stopped soon after, but I kept on drawing.
She asked, “So you just kept drawing from there, and you feel like if you were going to debut, it would be good to jump?” Mr. Endo replied, “I have been drawing since then.
That’s right. I read only JUMP as a magazine. When I was in elementary school, I really admired “DRAGON BALL” and wanted to be Akira Toriyama (the author). Toriyama drew pictures for “Dragon Quest,” didn’t he? I wrote in my graduation essay in elementary school that I wanted to work for a video game company, not as a manga artist. I wanted to be Mr. Toriyama.
Mr. Endo submitted his first manga when he was in the fourth or fifth grade. When Mr. Hayashi, the editor in charge of the project, explained that “some people come with their parents to bring in their manga,” Ms. Tanesaki asked, “Do you feel that different people are different since you were in elementary school? Mr. Hayashi replied, “Elementary school students have a hard time with quicksand. Mr. Hayashi replied, “It is difficult for elementary school students…although I think there are probably junior high school students. Elementary school students are just having fun drawing, so it’s all OK.” He added that he would be happy to accommodate future professionals like Mr. Endo, who used to come to the event.
Endo first submitted his work as an elementary school student, and when he was 19 years old, he made his debut at the “Story King” manga award sponsored by Shonen Jump, winning the semi-king in the manga category in 2000. According to Hayashi, the usual route is to publish a few read-only works to solidify the foundation of manga creation, while searching for what he wants to draw and trying his hand at the serialization stage.

Anya, the character she plays, has the ability to read people’s minds.
When asked by her how she decides on the theme and setting of her work when she starts a new series, Endo replied, “I came up with the setting (for “SPY x FAMILY”) almost entirely on my own. Mr. Hayashi told me I could draw whatever I wanted. I agonized over it alone and came up with it.
Mr. Hayashi shared an episode in which he received an e-mail from Mr. Endo the day before the meeting in which the film was to be created, saying, “I can’t come up with anything,” along with a template for the film.
Mr. Endo said, “I think it’s the same with any work, but I think it comes out of the accumulation of all the work that has been done before. As the fan book says, I think it’s a compilation of the best of the previous readings, or rather, it’s an accumulation of the previous works.
He drew a comedy in the read-out piece he drew before the serialization of “SPY x FAMILY” and felt that he had a good response to it. In addition to this, he recalls that Anya was born out of the positive feedback he received from the people around him regarding the character of a small child.
She asked, “How and who determines the abilities?”
Endo and Hayashi made a list of various supernatural abilities and discussed what each ability could do.
Endo said, “We decided that the only ability that would be appropriate for a child would be mind reading, and since the theme is espionage, we thought that the most critical ability for a spy would be to read minds.
