A New Gundam Set in a School 「Suletta & Miorine」
Ichinose: I never thought I would be chosen to play the main character in an anime with such a big title. About the next day after the audition, I received a phone call from the manager, but I was just sleeping, and when I answered the phone in my sleep, he said, I’ve been chosen to play the main role in a Gundam! but I thought it must have been a dream, so I went back to sleep and went to When I woke up in the morning and looked at my cell phone, I saw the call history and thought to myself, “It’s really been decided! That’s when I realized it all over again (laugh). Now that I have been chosen as the main character, I am determined to play the role and enjoy the pressure of the role until the end.
Lynn: I was actually in a slump when I heard about the Gundam audition. However, I had a strong desire to be a part of this work, so I tried to give the best performance that I had so that I would not have any regrets. It was just on my birthday when I received the news that I had been accepted, and it was the happiest birthday present of my life (laugh). I felt a rush of joy afterwards, and at the same time, I was fired up to do a play that would live up to the high expectations everyone had for me in this historical work of the Gundam series.
-What was your impression of the Gundam series so far?
Ichinose: I used to have a strong impression that it was a “boys’ anime,” but when I actually watched it, I found that it depicted women fighting in mobile suits in a cool way. Also, if you delve deeper into the human relationships in battle, there are some sad parts. …… For example, in “Mobile Suit Gundam,” Amuro Ray and Captain Ramba Ral had to fight each other because they were enemies, but if they were in different positions, I sometimes think ……. Gundam is a work that makes you think about the meaning of fighting.
Lynn: I watched “SEED” and “00” in real time when I was a student, and I was so absorbed in the series that I bought merchandise and theme song CDs and went to events featuring the voice actors. The fact that the battlefield is in space has a certain unrealistic feel to it, which is appealing, and as Ichinose-san said, the realistic depiction of battles between humans is what makes the work so interesting and deep.
-I feel that Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is fresh not only because it is the first TV series to feature a female protagonist, but also because it is set in a school.
Ichinose: In the previous Gundam series, there was a sense of urgency as if a war was about to start right from the beginning, but since this work is set in a “school,” there is a sense that each character is lively in their own life size, and there are scenes that can be seen as comical.
Lynn: Compared to the past series, the first impression you get is quite different. It doesn’t seem serious at the moment, but because of that, there is a sense of fear of not knowing what is going to happen in the future. …… (laugh) In that sense, I think this work is easy to get into for those who have never touched the Gundam series before.
-The witch in the title of Gundam may actually be a key word to unravel the story, isn’t it?
Ichinose: Why are they called witches, and is it about Suletta? Are there other witches? There are so many things to wonder about. I also think that how Suletta will act in the future will be an important point, so I would like you to pay attention and watch her.
Lynn: The word witch appears many times in the anime, but there is no clear reference to it. We may find out whether it is righteous or evil after seeing the story through to the end, or maybe it is something we don’t need to know. That is something we would like to search for together.
-What characters or mobile suits besides your own role are you interested in?
Ichinose: All the characters are very unique, but I am interested in Elan Ceres. His Gundam Pharact is stylish and cool, so I can’t wait to see it in action in the anime, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it will be involved in the story in the future.
Lynn: Shadik Zeneli is a presence that I am interested in right now. He is always aloof, elusive, and mysterious, and I am excited to see how this will be revealed in the future. I also really like the knightly look of his mobile suit, Michaelis.
-Finally, do you have a message for the viewers?「Suletta & Miorine」
Ichinose: Suletta Mercury, the character I play, has an introverted personality and sometimes spins around because she doesn’t feel comfortable around other people. but this side of her makes me feel close to her and there are many moments when she cheers me up. Because the story takes place in a school setting, you can enjoy watching it by comparing it to relationships that you may have around you, and I think you will receive from her the courage to try your best to convey what you want to say. It is a work that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. Please continue to support THE WITCH FROM MERCURY!
Lynn: I think that the complexities of human relationships and the struggles of things going wrong that are depicted in the Gundam series can be found in our daily lives, and I think that this work contains hints for resolving these issues and becoming independent. I hope you will enjoy THE WITCH FROM MERCURY, which is filled” with powerful battle scenes and many new challenges that will satisfy not only long-time Gundam fans but also first-time viewers of the series.
Thank you for watching. See you soon.
