Mabe: Chainsaw Man is also a character who destroys in a sense.
She said she wanted to make music you’ve never heard before, and I reflected on that.
I see that your method of creation is actually linked to the direction of the work. What do you two think about the taste of the music this time around?
Mabe To be honest, I had my doubts. Early on in the composition process, I had a plan like “as is, with relativity,” but that is something I have a hard time doing myself. That piece is my past, so it is rather difficult for me to trace” it. I was also worried that it would be for people who knew me in the past and that the audience would be narrowed. However, I thought that if Ano-chan was going to sing it, it would be finished in a way that would be suitable for everyone. In the demo, I was a little more conservative with the seasoning, but Mr. Inotaku (TAKU INOUE), who arranged the song, said, “It’s okay to be this aggressive. He suggested a rather drastic direction. So, I definitely could not have made this song the way it is now by myself. However, when I was invited to appear on Ano’s radio show the other day, we got into a conversation about what kind of music I wanted to make. She said, “I want to make music that has never been heard before,” but I thought that the music I made this time sounded like something I had heard before, and I felt a little sorry about that (laugh).
Ano (laugh).
Mabe: However, once again, this time the composition was very innovative. Like what you said earlier about breaking it down, if you continue to do music, you become unable to break down your own way of working. In trying to break it down, I tend to get away from good compositions, but in a bad way. So, the fact that I was able to create a bold piece that was close to a self-parody, while still maintaining the quality of the work, was really thanks to this project.
Ano: I was working with Mr. Mabe, who was also a member of Theory of Relativity, so I was happy to sing a song that showed his colors. That’s exactly I also made various requests to Mr. Inotaku, such as I want you to add this kind of sound to the song, or I want you to add strange sounds.
What exactly are these strange sounds?
Mabe: Heartbeats, for example. I think this was in the music from the early stage.
Ano That’s right. Also, there was a game sound like that Mr. Inotaku had originally arranged, and I thought it would be a good accent for the song, so I asked him to add more of it, and I also told him in detail about its position and volume. I had an image of a cute vomit (laugh), so I thought it was perfect for the song, and I pushed for that.
I think it would be a bit of a relief to hear this song after that story (laugh). At the time of creation of this song, you had not heard the ending theme by other artists, right?
Mabe: Yes, I didn’t know that.
Ano I had only heard the lineup of artists, and since there were all the people I wanted to have sing from my point of view as a Chainsaw Man fan, it was strange to find myself in that lineup. That’s why I had a lot of trouble. I also thought that the deciding factor was what kind of direction to take with the music. I have sung various songs as a solo singer, so I can control it any way what I really sing, so I wanted to deliver music that only I can do in this lineup, and this is the kind of tune I came up with.
Have you two already seen the ending video?
Ano : We have seen the ending, which is still in the pre-finished stage. So I’m looking forward to seeing what the finished product will actually look like.
I guess that’s what 「good singing」 means.
How did the recording proceed?
Mabe: We only worked together on the tentative songs, and I wasn’t there for her vocal recording, but this time I participated as a performer, and for the first time in a while, Moreover, I played the bass guitar. Ano-chan was there and we had a great time recording the song.
Ano I was first surprised to hear him say that he hadn’t played the bass guitar in a while. I asked him about it later, but from what I heard on the spot, it didn’t “feel” that way at all. But from his point of view, he wanted to finish it quickly because it had been a long time since he had recorded. He said so on the radio (laugh).
Mabe: It’s just like riding a bicycle. Even though it’s been a while, I can still pluck the strings on the bass guitar, but my stamina is not as good as it used to be. After the sound check, my fingers were so stiff that I wanted to finish quickly after only a few takes (laugh).
Ano But he played without making me feel it, so I thought he was indeed a professional.
Mabe The atmosphere at the site was so good and comfortable that I wanted to stay there forever (laugh).
The bass line etc. in the A melody after the second chorus was so brilliant that it was hard to believe that he had not picked up the bass guitar for a while.
Mabe: That was about the fifth take (laugh). Mr. Nishiura (Kensuke Nishiura) was the drummer this time, and he is a genius type, so he doesn’t remember every single thing he did in each take. So, he would play a part many times and adopt the sound that was good. He kept saying, 「Let’s do it again,」 「Let’s do it again,」 and I said, 「Give me a break」(laugh). In the end, with the cheering power of Ano-chan and the nice direction of Mr. Inotaku, it all worked out.
What did you keep in mind when you were recording the song?
Ano: The chorus of the song is very catchy and exciting, so I had to put my voice on the line for that part. I was singing, but I felt like I was talking or talking to myself. Also, the way you put the words in the lyrics was quite unique. I was conscious of singing 「oh, i need」rhythmically in tune with the lyrics of 「wow ai ni-」.
Mabe Maybe she will deny it, but I thought this is what “good singing” means. Her sense of rhythm is very good, but the way she sings itself is wonderful. When Toshiyuki Nishida was once asked a question like “what makes a good actor,” he said, “An actor is good just by being there. That is exactly how I feel about Ano-chan.
Ano I thought it was a pleasant song from my standpoint as a singer. The chorus is fun emphasizes the voice, but the rest of the song is also pleasant to sing. Even before we started working on the song together, I thought, It will definitely go well with my voice, and it really did, and I was able to sing it naturally.
Mabe: The melodies I composed are really difficult to sing. It’s an easy-to-remember but hard-to-sing melody, so there are surprisingly few people who are compatible with ……. If I tell you this, I may lose my job (laugh). In that sense, Ano-chan was a perfect fit.
Shall we make a mini-album?
Ano, were you ever conscious of your own sense of rhythm?
Ano: Up to now, most of the lyrics have been sentences, but this time, especially the lyrics have a feeling of being full of various words, so I thought it would not be interesting unless I was even more conscious of the rhythm when singing. For example, I included many phrases that I have never used in lyrics before, such as 「tic, tic, tic」 and 「thump, thump, thump,」 and I had to add many accents in the chorus, such as 「Get, get, get, get, on!」 Especially, 「Bet,bet ,bet ,bet ,on!」 is very difficult to say. It was the hardest part of the recording, and I had a mental Gestalt collapse halfway through (laugh).
Mabe: I’m sure this is absolutely difficult, but Ano-cyan wrote the lyrics herself, didn’t she? (Laugh)
Ano That’s right. It is fun to master the song in that sense, so I want everyone to sing it.
Mabe I often hum this phrase, too, and it’s fun.
I am also interested in the use of the word 「diversity」 in the title of such a song.
Mabe How did you come up with this title?
Ano It is simply a sense of the word. It may be a song about vomit kisses, but there are also deep kisses, and I think they are all vomit derived from one kind of love. Diversity is a word that I see in many places these days, and I myself am often said to be someone who symbolizes diversity either way. I think that even kisses have diversity, and when I wrote the song about it, the word fell into place.
Mabe She doesn’t waste too many words in her choice of words, and her sense of style is amazing, because I would never have come up with these lyrics. In fact, if she wanted to, she could have used a lot of strange words and made it sound like a toy box, but the fact that she doesn’t do that shows that she is honest about her work and has a clear idea of what she wants to write. I don’t know if she does it consciously or not, but I think she is very good at controlling the self that she puts into her songs. If she is doing this on purpose, I respect her for trying her best, but if she is doing it unconsciously, I think she is a genius.
I’m looking forward to seeing their reactions after the episode 7 airs. At the same time, I would like to take this collaboration as an opportunity to listen to another form of co-composition.
Mabe: As long as it’s okay with Ano-chan, let’s do it together.
Ano, it’s the same feeling that I would love to have you.
Mabe I already have an image that I would like to do this kind of work with her next.
Ano I’m so happy. I felt like we produced this song by adding. Next time, I want to do a very subtractive collaboration. I want to make a mini album with just the two of us.
Mabe Then, shall we do that together? (Laugh)
Thank you for watching. See you soon.
